Google@UH - How To Prevent Spam Google Calendar Events/Invitations

Overview

Spammers can send unwanted Google Calendar invites to your email, leading to spam events in your calendar. This article provides instructions on updating the calendar settings to prevent this.

Update Google Calendar Settings

  1. On your computer, open Google Calendar (link).
  2. At the top right, click on the Settings Menu () > Settings.
  3. On the left, under General, click Event settings Add invitations to my calendar.
  4. Select an option:
    • From everyone: All invitations are automatically added to your calendar.
      • The "From everyone" setting applies to invitations sent directly to your email address. For invitations sent to a Google Group that you're a member of, you can respond to the email to add the event to your calendar.
    • Only if the sender is known: Events are automatically added to your calendar if the sender is in your contacts, part of your organization, or someone you previously interacted with.
      • If the event organizer is not a sender in your contacts, part of your organization, or someone you previously interacted with, you will receive an email-based invitation and can review the email to choose whether or not to add the event to your calendar.
      • After you mark a sender as known or you interact with them, future invitations from that sender will be automatically added to your calendar.
    • When I respond to the invitation in email: An event is added to your calendar only after you respond to the email notification.

If you are experiencing spam calendar events, ITS recommends, in most cases, changing this setting to Only if the sender is known for a balance between calendar usability and prevention of unwanted spam events.
