Naming Convention Considerations

Naming organizations:
  • The maximum length for a GitHub organization name is 39 characters.
  • Allowed Characters: alphanumeric characters (a–z, 0–9) and hyphens where an org name cannot start or end with a hyphen and consecutive hyphens (my--org) are disallowed.

UH IT Community Recommendations

  • Standardize on GitHub Organizations and public projects as our repository strategy so that we may more easily organize, share and discover each others' work. Participating campus project teams shall follow the root and campus naming convention.
  • Impose a hierarchical naming convention for UH GitHub organizations: root-campus-orgunit
    • Root name for the root of the hierarchy
      • uh-
    • Campus name include the root plus the standard campus prefix. The term “campus” is used loosely.
      • Campus-org prefixes:
        • uh-hawaii-
        • uh-hilo-
        • uh-honolulu-
        • uh-jabsom-
        • uh-kapiolani-
        • uh-kauai-
        • uh-leeward-
        • uh-manoa-
        • uh-system-
        • uh-westoahu-
        • uh-windward-
    • Organization unit name
      • This final part of the Organization name is at the discretion of the campus project team.  Recommendation is to keep this part as flat as possible and not impose much more depth.  The above examples illustrate 2 levels of additional depth.
Example of system and campus organization names for GitHub:
  • uh-system-its-iam
    • Organization belonging to the Information Technology Services Department's Identity and Access Management group - for projects and sample code related to CAS, Grouper, Shib, etc.
  • uh-manoa-ics-csdl
    • Organization belonging to the UH Manoa Department of Information and Computer Sciences, Collaborative Software Development Laboratory
