Overview
Your GitHub Account is Personal
If you have not yet created a personal GitHub account, you must first create one using the following link: https://github.com/signup. We recommend using a personal (third-party) email address to sign up for your personal GitHub account.
What happens to my GitHub account when I leave UH?
GitHub accounts are portable! If you had signed up for a GitHub account using your @hawaii.edu email address, ensure that you update your the primary email address for your GitHub account to use a personal email address before you graduate or leave the university system. Your personal repositories and work will remain in your account. You will lose access to any non-public UH repositories.
Copilot Availability
Students are eligible for Github Copilot Pro and the Github Student Development Pack. For access, you must apply through your Github account at https://github.com/settings/education/benefits.
Faculty are also eligible for Github Copilot Pro. For access, you must apply by submitting proof of academic employment, such as a faculty ID or employment verification letter, using your UH Github account through the GitHub Education for Teachers portal.
Staff members may purchase a Github Copilot Pro license (coming soon).
Account Linking Instructions
You have received email inviting you to become a member of an organization in the UH GitHub Enterprise. Your personal GitHub account is used for accessing the organizations for which you have access. However, access requires authentication and for that you will use your UH credentials. First, you will link your person GitHub account to your UH credentials.
Prerequisites
-
You have a personal GitHub account and have shared its name with an owner of a UH GitHub Enterprise organization.
-
You have received an invitation to a UH GitHub Enterprise organization and plan to become a member.
Steps
-
Accept the org invitation (check the email account tied to your personal GitHub account).
-
-
Open the organization home page or one of its repositories
-
Perform Account Linking(1)
-
Authenticate with Entra using your UH Username and password.
-
UH Login how includes Entra authentication. However, we have only been syncing passwords to Entra since mid-January 2026, so you may have to change your UH password and wait a few minutes before authentication works. You can update your UH password by visiting
https://hawaii.edu/username/ and clicking on "One-step Password Change".
-
After a successful Entra authentication, GitHub will redirect you back to the org.
Troubleshooting
-
Confirm that you accepted the invite with the correct GitHub account, in the event that you have more than one.
-
Confirm that the org owner has added you to their grouping. If you know the name of the grouping, you can check your membership: <
https://www.hawaii.edu/its/uhgroupings>, Memberships option, and enter a portion of the grouping name in the filter.
-
If you are unable to log in, you may need to do a password reset to that Entra has your password hash and can authenticate you.
Footnotes
(1) Account linking links your UH Account to your personal GitHub account. When you leave UH, your personal GitHub account remains yours. Account linking couples the following:
-
Authentication, who are you: SSO with your GitHub account is required for authentication, proving that you are a member of the UH community and have been provided access to the UH GitHub Enterprise resources.
-
Authorization, what can you do: Your GitHub account is required for authorizations, controlling which organizations you can access and with what permissions.
