Windows - How to Enable the Hawaiian Language Keyboard

This articles guides you through enabling and using the Hawaiian keyboard on your Windows device.

Enabling the Hawaiian Keyboard on Windows

Hawaiian diacritics can be produced using the Hawaiian keyboard built into the Windows operating system.

  1. Open the Start Menu (indicated by the Windows icon in the bottom Taskbar).
  2. Click on the gear icon to enter Settings.
  3. On the left hand side, click on the Time & language tab.
  4. On the right hand side, select Language & region.
  5. Under Preferred Languages click the Add a language button.
  6. From the list select Hawai’i (Hawaiian).
  7. If prompted, cick on Next, then click on Install.
  8. Wait for your keyboard to download before using.

Using Hawaiian Diacritics on Windows

  1. The active keyboard (ENG or HAW) should appear in the lower right of your Taskbar next to the Date and Time
    1. ENG is for the English (US) keyboard
    2. HAW is for the Hawaiian keyboard
  2. Click on the active keyboard in the bottom right to switch to another saved keyboard. Or press the Windows key + spacebar to switch to a different keyboard
    1. To input the `okina, press the apostrophe (ʻ) key that is on the right of the semicolon key
    2. To input the kahakō (line above a vowel), hold down the alt key on the right side of your keyboard and press the desired vowel key
