Duo - How to Add a Device

Overview

This article provides instructions for you to add a smartphone, landline, tablet, or non-smartphone celluar phone to multi-factor authentication (MFA). You can visit Duo - General Recommendations and Authentication Methods (link) to decide which device is best for you.

Setting up a Smartphone

The instructions below apply to both iPhone and Android phones.

  1. Login to the UH Login MFA Device Registration (link) site
  2. Click on Get Started (for first time enrollment only)
  3. Click Duo Mobile
  4. Enter your phone number, including the area code (no parentheses or dashes needed) and click Continue.
  5. Confirm that the number shown is correct, then click Continue.
  6. If you have downloaded the Duo Mobile app to your phone, go to the next step. If you have not yet downloaded the Duo Mobile app to your phone, you can visit one of the following links from your smartphone:
  7. Once you have Duo on your device, click Next
  8. Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone. If you are asked if you want to allow Duo Mobile to send Notifications, allow notifications. Press the + icon in the upper right corner or press on the Add Account button.
  9. Select Use QR code. If you are asked if you want to allow Duo Mobile to access the Camera, allow access. Point your phone's camera at the barcode and once a green checkmark appears, you should see an Added Duo Mobile screen. Click Continue.
  10. You should see the message Setup completed! This means that you have successfully registered your smartphone.

Setting up a Landline

  1. Login to the UH Login MFA Device Registration (link) site
  2. Click on Get Started (for first time enrollment only)
  3. Click Phone number
  4. Enter your phone number, including the area code (no parentheses or dashes needed) and check the This is a landline phone box.
  5. If you do not have an extension, click Skip this step. If you have an extension, type it in the Extension box. Click Add extension.
  6. Confirm that the correct phone number is displayed and click Yes, it's correct.
  7. Click Continue
  8. If you have a tablet or smartphone available, it is recommended to setup Duo Mobile on one of those devices. Click Duo Mobile and see instructions to add Duo Mobile to a tablet/smartphone:
  9. You should see the message Setup completed! This means that you have successfully registered your landline.

Setting up a Tablet

  1. Login to the UH Login MFA Device Registration (link) site
  2. Click on Get Started (for first time enrollment only)
  3. Click Duo Mobile
  4. Click I have a tablet.
  5. If you have downloaded the Duo Mobile app to your phone, go to the next step. If you have not yet downloaded the Duo Mobile app to your phone, you can visit one of the following links from your smartphone:
  6. Once you have Duo on your device, click Next
  7. You will see a barcode displayed. Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone and press the + icon in the uper right corner or on the Add Account button.
  8. Select Use QR code and point your device's camera at the barcode. If you are asked if you want to allow Duo Mobile to access the Camera, allow access.
  9. After the green checkmark appears, you should see an Added Duo Mobile screen. Click Continue.
  10. If you have a phone available, it is recommended to add this device to Duo. Click Phone number and see these instructions to add Duo Mobile to a phone:
  11. You should see the message Setup completed! This means that you have successfully registered your tablet.

Setting up a non-smartphone Cellular Phone

  1. Login to the UH Login MFA Device Registration (link) site
  2. Click on Get Started (for first time enrollment only)
  3. Click Phone number
  4. Enter your phone number, including the area code (no parentheses or dashes needed) and click Continue.
  5. Confirm that the number shown is correct, then click Yes, it's correct.
  6. Click Continue
  7. If you have a tablet or smartphone available, it is recommended to setup Duo Mobile on one of those devices. Click Duo Mobile and see instructions to add Duo Mobile to a tablet/smartphone:
  8. You should see the message Setup completed! This means that you have successfully registered your phone.
